Winter Sport Insurance

Holiday insurance is important enough when going on holiday, but if you are taking a winter sport holiday, skiing, snowboarding etc., it can be almost invaluable.
It is important that you get excellent insurance for skiing and snowboarding activities, even off piste skiing and winter sport insurance that covers you if your ski equipment is delayed in transit so that you can claim for the cost of hiring winter sport equipment. And at the extreme end of the scale, your winter sport insurance should cover "Search and Rescue", that will cover the costs involved if the worst happens and you go missing whilst skiing.

Many foregin countries do not a National Health Service like we do in this country so medical treatment has to be paid for by the individual receiving the treatment. This is one of the reasons why winter sport holiday insurance or travel insurance is so important. If you travel throughout the year, it may be worth condidering an annual travel policy.

What does winter sport holiday or travel insurance cover?

This depends on the exact terms and conditions of your particular policy, but generally it includes:

Most winter sporting activities including skiing (inc. off piste), bobsleigh/luge/skeleton, big foot skiing, heliskiing, ice hockey, snowboarding, snowmobiles/skidoos, snow shoeing, tobogganing.
Cancellation of, or cutting short, your holiday because of injury on the slopes, cancellation of your holiday due to avalanches, lack of snow etc.
Delayed or missed connection(s)
Loss or theft of your belongings while you are away
Third party liability

What types of holiday and travel insurance are available?

In common with other insurance products, there are a number of different types of policy, these include:

Single Trip Insurance

Single trip holiday winter sports insurance covers a single trip or holiday, great for the annual family holiday.

If you will be taking part in more than one skiiing or winter sports trip within the year then it may be cheaper to obtain annual travel insurance instead.

Annual Travel Insurance

If you take a number of winter sport holidays per year it may be worth considering an annual travel insurance policy as it will often be cheaper than paying for single trip travel insurance each time you travel. It also means that there is no need to arrange cover for each journey you take. Although most annual or multi trip travel policies allow you to travel as many times as you wish each year, there may be a limit on the length of each trip.

It will probably be possible to cover the whole family under the annual travel insurance policy too, which may save a great deal of money compared with insuring each person under a seperate policy.
